The Importance Of Lightning In Architecture Design

Updated: Mar 31, 2022

Illumination in your Designs and Architecture Projects

Illumination has a tremendous impact on our homes and workplaces. An incredibly designed room may as well look downright ugly if it has poor or lacking illumination. On the flip side, a badly designed room may have a far better at-glance appearance due to the proper use of this element.

The Growing Interest in Illumination in Architecture

Since the year 2017, architecture as a whole has become more conscious about the use of free shapes, which in turn has increased the need for quality illumination. Given this, while standardized lighting concepts can be applied over older projects, which is no longer enough for contemporary architecture, which requires illumination that is both diverse and adaptable. Due to this, the range of illumination types is immense, so it can fit any type of architectural design.

The Integration of Illumination in Modern Architecture Projects

The modern architect has no need for devices that generate light, but rather the light and atmosphere these generate. What do I mean by this? Simple, the device that gives off the light must be the least present as possible in the architecture, in the background, so that way the illumination itself becomes the focal point, giving it an almost inert look. Integrating these designs requires deep knowledge of the technologies and effects of light.

The Key Elements for Good Illumination in your Architecture Project:

1) Human Needs: the illumination quality of a building will affect the people living in it, from their satisfaction to their productivity, everything is affected by either a well-designed illumination plan or a badly developed one. As such, owners and managers can add value to their operations by investing in high-quality illumination, which will increase the productivity of their workers

2) Architectural Considerations: as we mentioned beforehand, the evolution of technology and techniques has increased the need for a specialist in illumination design. With this, illumination has become a creative extension of architecture and its main purpose that of complement shapes and colors.

3) Effective Use of Energy: in consequence of the increased necessity of quality illumination, the importance of cost-effectiveness has become even more crucial than before. As such, having ecological awareness when designing the illumination of an interior means being smart about its application, using the design of the space to your favor in order to maximize the effects of as little sources of lightning as possible. That way you don’t need multiple devices, reducing the cost and usage of energy.

As we can see, these last few years have been a total reinvention in the world of architecture, and like with a form of advancement in the history of humanity, we must learn to adapt and give it use that is not only practical but also sustainable and eco-friendly. After all, balance is a key element of architecture and its design, and it is not only limited to the technical and esthetical aspects of the discipline.
